Benefit-Cost Analysis: traps, challenges and best practice

This workshop addresses a range of challenges and complexities that arise when applying BCA in practice. Drawing from his 12-week online micro-credential course on BCA, David will discuss a selection of these challenges and propose appropriate ways to address them. Issues from which the topics covered will be drawn include:
- Avoiding over-optimism in BCA inputs
- Multiple methods for addressing uncertainty in BCA
- Approaches to sensitivity analysis - Representing the risk of project failure
- The use of cost of repair as a way to quantify benefits
- Whether to include job creation as a benefit, and if so, how?
- Whether and how to include the excess burden of taxation
- Decision criteria (in brief, as the issue is covered in detail in a Mini-Symposium during the main conference)
- Comparing projects of different durations.
Early Career Virtual Event

Time: 5:30pm - 8:00pm AEDT, Monday 7 February 2022
Duration: 2 hours, 30 minutes
This event is part of the Early Career Participant Program. The Program is designed to support Early Career Participants to build their wider community of practice through activities fostering engagement with experienced industry professionals and academics. The event will be supported by three senior AARES members and will run as follows:
- 45 minutes - Presentations by the 3 senior members about career and life experience (30 minutes) with questions from the audience (15 minutes)
- 5 minutes break
- 45 minutes - The 3 senior members will lead general discussion about publishing and collaboration
- 5 minutes break
- 50 minutes - Presentations by Early Career Participants about their research (presenters have been allocated to 3 groups, each with a senior member)
