After Dinner Speaker

Virginia Malley, Deputy Chair NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust

Virginia Malley is a professional Chair and non-executive director with experience in the renewable energy, environmental, financial services, insurance and care sectors. Most recently Virginia has been responsible for overseeing the integrity and performance of market-based environmental schemes - renewable energy, carbon abatement and biodiversity conservation - and significant community care schemes here in NSW administered by icare.

A distinctive feature of Virginia’s governance career has been her oversight of programs and schemes designed by governments to give effect to industry transitions, investment outcomes, environmental outcomes and community care. These include the Renewable Energy Target, the Emissions Reduction Fund, the Biodiversity Conservation Trust’s implementation of the NSW Government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy.

Virginia undertook the first independent review of the Carbon Industry Code of Conduct in 2019-20. From 2021 onwards, Virginia has chaired the industry’s conduct self-regulator, the Code Review Panel, which promotes and enforces the carbon project industry’s conduct standards. Those standards are aimed at protecting the interests of stakeholders including rural landholders and traditional custodians.

Virginia has served on the boards of Commonwealth and NSW government agencies and significant private sector investment companies including icare, the Biodiversity Conservation Trust, the Clean Energy Regulator, Macquarie Investment Management and Perpetual Superannuation.
