Description

Dear AARES Vic Branch community,

You are warmly invited to an in-person meeting of the AARES Victorian Branch at Melbourne University on Thursday, 16th April 2026, from 5:00–6:30 pm (AEST).

Gavan Dwyer from Marsden Jacob Associates will speak on: Towards a National Statement on First Nations in Agriculture - some observations.

Following Gavan’s presentation, we will hold a brief AGM, before moving on to an informal get-together.

All Australian agriculture ministers have agreed to develop a National Statement on First Nations in Agriculture. Ministers agreed that the statement should be ambitious and driven by First Nations self-determination principles. They also agreed it should advance First Nations perspectives, experiences and interests. The goal of the statement is to drive greater economic inclusion for First Nations Australians in agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

Gavan recently assisted Australian Government consultations with First Nations on their views and aspirations for a National Statement. He will speak to some observations from those consultations and the role the agricultural economics profession can play in helping First Nations achieve greater economic inclusion in the sector.
