North American Branch

Branch AGM

The North American Branch holds its AGM in July each year.

Dear NAB Members,

We had a great showing in D.C. at the meetings.  The track sessions were all well attended and quite informative. We also had a very productive business meeting that I would like to share with you below. First, my apologies for not scheduling a formal social.  We discussed the importance of such networking events and plan on making it a regular late afternoon/early evening occurrence on the Monday (or first day of sessions) of the meetings.

It was very exciting to hear from David Pannell about the new AARES YouTube channel,
AARES YouTube. It currently features some very interesting interviews of Australian ag economists.  Check it out!

We’d like to put a call out for session themes now and already have some good ideas running.  One on sugar relating to trade, production externalities, food, nutrition, and health; another looking at child immunization issues with a potential focus on indigenous populations; and another diving into free trade agreements contrasting between the US & Australia and Asian economies.  Please let me know if you are interested in any of these topics or have ideas of your own for Atlanta. I’ll be reminding you of deadlines in the coming months.

We plan on getting more info out there about what everyone is working on to encourage even more collaboration, so be on the lookout for solicitations from us for news.

There was strong sentiment in officially combining the executive duties of AARES-NAB and AAEA AUS Section.  This has been somewhat informal to this point, but it was suggested to codify the duties formally.  Since AAEA requires voting for section leadership (chair, chair-elect, and secretary/treasurer), the motion is to add to their responsibilities the duty of serving as the NAB executive committee (president, and president-elect/secretary/treasurer (PEST)). This should greatly simplify responsibilities such that the President and PEST would also be the Chair and CHEST. Please let me know if you have any comments or concerns with this via email.  If I don’t hear from anyone on the manner, we will move forward with Kate Fuller being PEST and CHEST as I serve as President and Chair this year.  Also, please consider putting your name up for following Kate in this role!

The call for the Heading South Award is out. It’s a great opportunity for those that have interest in attending.

Mariah Ehmke announced that she is part of a team working on a special issue of AJARE on Food Fraud.  They are hoping to put together a 1-day symposium prior to AARES.  If you are interested, please email Mariah for details.  Mariah.Ehmke@uwyo.edu

IFMA’s next congress is going to be in Tasmania a couple weeks after AARES.  That might be a great opportunity to participate in two conferences and tack on a little tourism while you are there.

Cheers,

Michael
